Invasion Season 3 unites heroes against the ultimate alien enemy
The chances are that you haven’t been paying as much attention to Invasion as you have to some of Apple TV+'s other genre series that came out at roughly the same time. While Silo became a cult favorite in sci-fi, and Foundation had its legions of fans, Invasion is like the odd series out, even with its strong following and some interesting elements. Mixed reviews — particularly for its first season, which felt like a slow-burn even for Apple TV+ standards — and the occasional comment from die-hard fans who describe their love/hate relationship with the show gives an idea of the fan response.
But Invasion has its positives. Cinematography has been its strong point for all seasons, and creators have never been afraid to shoot for the stars, thematically speaking. The execution, however, has been hit-and-miss in some ways. The trailer for the third and final season, released by Apple TV+ this week, bodes well for Invasion finally hitting its stride, as it has a darker and more unified feel about it.
Invasion was created by David Weil (Hunters) and producer Simon Kinberg, known for writing and producing multiple X-Men films, as well as The Martian, which garnered a bunch of Oscar nominations. The concept, however, is easily the show’s most compelling asset: an alien invasion viewed from the perspective of normal people around the world. The narrative weaves in English, Japanese, and Pashto on a truly international scale but keeps its focus on the human experience.
The first season of Invasion was all about the initial stages of the extraterrestrial threat. The aliens, in the early days, were very much a secondary story for the interpersonal dramas and emotional arcs that the show followed from episode to episode. It was a common source of disappointment and frustration for viewers who wanted more alien action, but it set the tone for Invasion as a much more intimate and character-driven story in the sci-fi mold.
Season 1 ended with the moment when the aliens’ full invasion could no longer be contained. The second season, with the invasion underway, picked up the pace and significantly upped the stakes. The change of tone infused the show with new energy: now, the surviving characters had to adapt to a fundamentally changed world. For most of humanity, it meant being corralled in small safe zones from which they were forbidden to leave, with survival often the result of an impossible choice. The pacing was still deliberate, but the storytelling picked up steam, setting the stage for the season finale and season 3.
Season 3 Brings Invasion Characters Together for High-Stakes Mission
Invasion‘s third season picks up two years after the conclusion of the previous season, and the threat is more terrifying than ever. In the official season 3 synopsis, the characters’ storylines that have been proceeding separately up until this point are now colliding for the first time. Instead of being spread out all over the world, the main characters of Invasion now have a mission that will bring them together in a dangerous, high-stakes game: they will have to sneak into the aliens’ mothership. The show, thus far featuring a disparate array of storylines, finds its characters and survivors uniting for what may be their last chance.
The aliens, meanwhile, have reached their “apex” form and are unleashing their deadly tendrils, which are rapidly spreading around the world. The stakes are high: it will take all the strength, resourcefulness, and intelligence of all the surviving characters to have a chance at protecting humanity. As these characters come together for a common cause, they form new alliances and break long-standing relationships in the face of an impossible challenge.
The Invasion cast returning for the third season includes Golshifteh Farahani as Aneesha Malik; Shioli Kutsuna as Mitsuko Yamato; Shamier Anderson as Trevante Cole; India Brown as Jamila Hudson; Shane Zaza as the polarizing tech billionaire Nikhil Kapur; and Enver Gjokaj as Clark Evans. New to the main cast in the third season is Erika Alexander, joining as a series regular.
From a narrative point of view, Season 3 is the perfect opportunity for Invasion to resolve its longer-running arcs, while also delivering the broader action set pieces and alien confrontation that have been called for by audiences since the show’s first episode. The more intimate, character-driven aspect of Invasion has been one of its most compelling qualities, but it has yet to show its hand on the full spectacle side.
Can Invasion turn the skeptics into fans? It is too early to tell, but the third season of Invasion is boding well for itself, with a darker, more confident, and more expansive look at its trailer. It appears to have the right blend of emotional core, memorable set pieces, and the life-or-death stakes that can drive a show to must-watch levels.
The third and final season of Invasion will premiere on Apple TV+ on August 22, 2025.
