Would Trump Pardon a Critic? Diddy’s Case May Test That
Donald Trump is once again under the spotlight for his comments on rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs. On Friday, August 1, the former president made an appearance on Newsmax’s Finnerty, where he was asked about whether he would pardon Combs after he was convicted on federal charges last month.
In early July, Combs, the founder of Bad Boy Records, was found guilty of a single federal charge of transportation with intent to promote and engage in prostitution. However, he was cleared of more serious charges such as sex trafficking and racketeering, although the seven-week trial involved several testimonies and shocking allegations. Singer Cassie Ventura even took the stand, accusing Combs of abusing her and trafficking her during their previous relationship. The Bad Boy Records founder has since denied the claims and has maintained his innocence.
On Friday, Trump was asked directly if he would consider pardoning Combs, to which he gave an evasive but slightly affirmative answer. “Well, he was essentially, I guess, sort of half-innocent,” the former president started. “He’s still in jail or something, but he was celebrating a victory. But I guess it wasn’t as good a victory.”
Trump also reflected on their relationship as he was pressed on the issue. “We were very friendly. I got along with him great,” he said. “But he used to like me a lot. I think when I ran for politics, that relationship busted up,” Trump stated. “But we were very, very friendly. We used to have a lot of fun together. I would certainly look at the facts. If I think somebody was mistreated, whether they like me or don’t like me, it wouldn’t have any impact on me.”
Legal Troubles, Presidential Pardon?
Trump had also made similar comments earlier this year when a similar question was asked of him. This was during a press conference at the Oval Office last May when Trump was asked by Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy if he would pardon Sean Combs. Like the interview from Friday, the former president gave a noncommittal response but seemed to hint towards the possibility of a pardon if he deems it necessary. At that time, he said that he would “look at the facts.”
“I haven’t spoken to him in years,” Trump said. “We were very friendly, as you know. I used to get along with him. I used to get along with a lot of people in the hip-hop business.” He also doubled down and reiterated that the outcome of the decision will not depend on how Combs might feel about him. “If I think somebody was mistreated, whether they like me or don’t like me, it wouldn’t have any impact on me.”
Combs remains in legal limbo for now as the charges against him were the result of a years-long federal investigation. Despite being acquitted of most charges, the remaining federal charge is also serious, and he was subsequently sentenced to a maximum of 20 years in prison. The Bad Boy Records founder will be officially sentenced on October 3.
There have also been conversations as to whether Trump would pardon Combs. His current comments on the case are the first since his potential intervention was reported and discussed. Despite the subsequent fallout between Combs and Trump, the former president seemed to express a willingness to give a second look to the Combs situation.
“He was celebrating a victory,” Trump said. “But I guess it wasn’t as good o victory.”
A video of Trump’s full comments on the Finnerty interview has since been uploaded on X (formerly Twitter), where political pundits, hip-hop fans, and legal experts have also offered their own two cents on the matter. While a pardon remains up in the air, there is at least a possibility that Trump might consider the move at this point.
In the meantime, sentencing for Combs will take place on October 3, and until then, more questions will be raised regarding the severity of his punishment and how his relationship with Trump would play into his future in the music business.
