Ryan Coogler-Produced Ironheart Gets Official Premiere Date
Ryan Coogler has had a good year so far, thanks to the runaway box office success of his most recent film, Sinners, but the filmmaker already has something else on the horizon: Ironheart. Marvel has released a new trailer for the upcoming limited series, which stars Dominique Thorne as a young superhero known as Riri Williams, ahead of the show’s June 2025 release.
A six-part entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ironheart is Thorne’s take on a teenage technology genius who first appeared in the original comics as a protégé of Tony Stark. The new series will be the final television installment of MCU Phase Five.
Ironheart was originally announced in December 2020, with a 2023 release window. However, the studio later announced an overhaul of its long-term plans, dialing back the number of titles it would release in any given year, as part of a strategy to avoid market saturation. As a result, the series’ premiere was delayed, with the first three episodes arriving this summer. Footage first shown during the 2024 D23 convention is said to feature “a crime show with an Iron Man twist at the center” with a more grounded, noir feel than most other MCU series.
Marvel introduced the character of Riri Williams to the big screen in 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. In that installment, she became embroiled in a conflict between Wakanda and Namor and his army of blue-skinned soldiers after creating a device for detecting vibranium while studying at MIT. Riri eventually formed a friendship with Shuri over their shared love of science and developed her armored suit, inspired by Iron Man’s, that she used to help the Wakandans defend themselves. After she helped broker peace and the end of the war, she was forced to leave her suit behind with the Wakandans when she returned to MIT.
Technology Versus Sorcery in the Latest MCU
Ironheart, which takes place shortly after the events of Wakanda Forever, finds Riri back in her hometown of Chicago. The official synopsis for the series promises that “Set after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ironheart pits technology against magic when Riri—determined to make her mark on the world—returns to her hometown of Chicago. Her unique take on building iron suits is brilliant, but in pursuit of her ambitions, she finds herself wrapped up with the mysterious yet charming Parker Robbins, aka “The Hood” (Anthony Ramos).”
The series also features an ensemble cast, including Lyric Ross as Riri’s best friend, Natalie Washington; Alden Ehrenreich as Joe McGillicuddy; Manny Montana as Cousin John; Matthew Elam as Xavier Washington; and Anji White as Riri’s mother, Ronnie. Shea Coulée is also on board as Slug. Others returning to the MCU include Jim Rash as the dean of MIT, reprising the role he first played in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. Sacha Baron Cohen is also confirmed for an as-yet-unspecified part.
The new trailer for the series gets to the point quickly. The first moments show Riri entering an abandoned pizza restaurant, only to find herself trapped in an elevator with a two-minute warning before the whole place goes up in poison gas. The test, which is revealed to have been arranged by The Hood as a form of “interview,” requires Riri to break into a device mounted on one of the floors that contains a gas mask before she asphyxiates. But she refuses to do so, instead opting to create her way out of the situation.
The Hood, who is impressed by her display of creativity, invites her to “join him in an unspecified bad thing,” one that is clearly not legal but that he nonetheless insists is necessary to make something “iconic.” Eager to test her skills and to be allowed to create something that can “actually kick some ass,” Riri agrees, much to the chagrin of Natalie, who warns her about The Hood’s reputation as a criminal and whose intentions are still unclear. It is advice that Riri may come to regret taking, especially after The Hood says, “Anyone who has ever accomplished anything iconic in life has had to do some questionable things to get it done.”
Marvel has confirmed that the first three episodes of Ironheart will arrive on Disney+ on June 24, 2025, with the remaining three episodes to debut weekly after that. No second season has been announced, but a continuation of the series may be in the works, should these first few episodes prove popular enough. In the meantime, fans can get an early look at the series’ action, tension, and character drama in the official trailer and a new behind-the-scenes featurette.
With Ryan Coogler’s history of marrying big-screen spectacle and earthbound narrative and Thorne’s already-promising performance as Riri Williams, Ironheart could well become the next big must-watch series in the Marvel universe, combining Iron Man’s tech-heavy legacy with a street-level crime story that hints at the future of the MCU.
