Nine teens have been arrested in connection with the June 24 shooting death of 16-year-old Trey Dean Wright of Johnsonville, South Carolina. According to local reports, the deadly altercation between Wright and 19-year-old Devan Scott Raper of Conway, which was reportedly over a girl, was also allegedly at least partially recorded on video by one of the other suspects.

Florence County sheriff’s deputies found Wright’s body along First Neck Road on June 24 after being shot multiple times. The remote, rural road where Wright was killed is approximately 45 miles west of Myrtle Beach. A day later, Raper was arrested for pulling the trigger in what officials described as an escalating verbal argument between the two.

But a day later, Florence County Sheriff T.J. Joye said Raper had received assistance from other people who had helped lure Wright to a remote road where the two had previously exchanged words, and that Raper “knew that Mr. Wright was coming with friends that had a history with Mr. Raper, he knew that Mr. Raper had the gun in his possession, and he had knowledge that a confrontation was about to happen.”

Joye said his office was still looking into Wright’s killing and that more arrests were likely, and as deputies continued to investigate the case in the weeks after the killing, the agency announced that nine more teens had been arrested. While some suspects are believed to have only helped lure Wright to the scene where he was killed, three other teens have been charged with murder in addition to Raper.

Florence County Sheriff T.J. Joye said Raper and the other suspects have prior records for various offenses, including illegal possession of guns and drug charges. “They had issues with each other, and it was over a female,” Joye said in an interview with local television station WBTW. “The sad thing is, you’ve got a 16-year-old who lost his life. You’ve got a 19-year-old who is going to be in jail the rest of his life. Over what?”

Raper and Wright’s girlfriend, 17-year-old Gianna Kistenmacher of Myrtle Beach, was the first to be arrested in connection with the killing and was charged with murder. Kistenmacher also faces accessory before the fact charges in the case. Florence County Sheriff T.J. Joye said in a news conference that Raper, who officials said has a lengthy arrest record, knew the 16-year-old was on his way with friends to a remote area and shot Wright, who approached him after he also displayed a gun, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

Kistenmacher allegedly played an important part in orchestrating the meeting, according to her arrest warrant affidavit, which states that she was charged as an accessory before the fact of murder and that she drove Raper to the remote area where Wright was waiting despite knowing that Raper was armed and that violence was expected to ensue.

Five other teens were later arrested and face adult charges under South Carolina law, while another three, ages 17 and 18, were charged with the murder. The seven have been identified by authorities as Hunter Kendall, Corrine Belviso, Sydney Kearns, Abby Belt, Elijah Treadway, RaeAnna Shuler, and Ian Ross. Prosecutors with the Florence County Solicitor’s Office have said in court documents that each played a role in orchestrating the events that led to the murder.

Three teenagers from the Myrtle Beach area have also been charged with murder along with Raper, local law enforcement officials said. In addition to Raper, the three others were 18-year-olds Hunter Kendall and Corrine Belviso, as well as 17-year-old Sydney Kearns.

Kendall, who also faces a murder charge, remains in custody without bond, while Belviso and Kearns were able to post a $20,000 surety bond each last week and have since been released from custody. The Florence County Sheriff’s Office has not released any additional information from its investigation, saying it was ongoing, and the Florence County Solicitor’s Office declined to comment on the ongoing case.

Wright’s mother, Ashley Lindsey, told Fox News Digital that the court proceedings were only making matters worse. “All this court hearing and bond court and stuff is driving me crazy,” she said. “I don’t even have time to sit down and think half the time, on top of losing my precious baby.”

Wright’s family is suffering from the effects of the shooting, which has not only killed their son but also has put Wright’s girlfriend and other friends of his in jail over the killing. What began as a personal dispute over a female has become a court case involving numerous suspects and has left the Florence County Sheriff’s Office and the families of both Trey Wright and Devan Raper to pick up the pieces from what many are calling a senseless tragedy.
